Marcel began playing the accordion when he was 10 years old. Taught by Harley Jones he soon became a member of the NZAA and entered competitions. Marcel was an avid competitor in many Championship classes, culminating in winning the New Zealand Solo Championship in 1978. Marcel then went on to represent the NZAA at the Coupe Mondiale in Cannes, France in 1979 and in Auckland in 1980.
As First Accordion for the North Shore Accordion Orchestra from 1975 he toured to the USA in 1979 and to Europe in 1981, marrying fellow accordionist Donna Love in 1984.
Marcel began teaching in 1977 and in 1981 helped found the Music Education Centre in conjunction with Harley Jones and Maurice Jones. Marcel held the role of Manager for the Music Education Centre at that time. His students and the students of many of the accordion teachers of the Music Education Centre, in both North Shore and West Auckland, were a mainstay of the NZAA Competitions and Festival, providing jobs for many accordion teachers.
He holds diplomas in both Accordion Performance and Teaching, is a member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers and has a Degree in Education and a Diploma in Teaching.
Marcel was invited to join the Board of the Accordion Examination Board of NZ and soon after began Examining for them. In 2011 he was elected Chairman, a position he still holds today.
He has provided venues for Master classes and accordion examinations and always made himself available to help at the NZAA Competitions and Festival. Nearly every year he has given up his time to adjudicate and help train new adjudicators.
On behalf of the New Zealand Accordion Association I hereby publicly thank Marcel for his years of dedicated Service to the accordion and present him with Life Membership of the New Zealand Accordion Association. |
