CITATION

Grayson Masefield became a family member of the NZAA almost from birth, first performing at a NZAA Festival playing a duet with his father in 1990 at four years old. He was to continue entering NZAA competitions culminating in winning the NZ and South Pacific Solo Champion in 2007.

Grayson had begun competing internationally in Australia and began to compete at Coupe Mondiale level from 2006. He has won multiple International and World Championships in Classical, Virtuoso and Digital Accordion. In 2009 he became the first person to win both Coupe Mondiale and Virtuoso competitions in the same year. This was the first time the NZAA had a member win a class at a Coupe Mondiale, and he still holds this honour.

His many performances in France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Slovakia, Italy, USA, Canada, Russia, Lithuania, Macedonia, China, Switzerland, Chile, Czech Republic, Singapore, South Korea, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Australia, Finland and Sweden are captured on Youtube and his extensive repertoire on his 3 albums. He has performed as soloist with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Chile, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Berliner Kammerorchester, Civic Orchestra of Victoria, Calabrian Philharmonic Orchestra, and in New Zealand, the Bay of Plenty Symphony, North Shore Brass Band and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and as a chamber music artist with formations of AOTANGO quintet and duo, all to further promote the accordion in New Zealand and overseas.

He holds degrees in Masters Performance (Lausanne Switzerland) and a Masters in Studio Pedagogy (Auckland) and is currently Instrumental Music Tutor for Accordion at The University of Auckland. In 2010 Grayson was elected to the Confederation des Accordionistes Music Committee and in 2018 was elected Vice Chairman. In 2021 Grayson was invited to join the Accordion Examination Board of New Zealand as a Board Member.

He adjudicates internationally in all of the competitions he has won and often gives Masterclasses and seminars in Universities throughout the world, he also has provided support to New Zealand students wishing to compete overseas. Grayson has collaborated with international composers Frank Angelis, Gorka Hermosa, Petri Makkonen, and NZ composers Gary Daverne, Ross Harris & David Mason.

The New Zealand Accordion Association would like to publicly thank Grayson for his work both internationally and in New Zealand by awarding him Life Membership.
